Buying Kitchen Cabinets

Know Before You Go

You’ve done your online research and looked at articles like our Kitchen Remodeling Steps article. Now you are ready to move on to actually buying your kitchen cabinets. Making the right cabinet choice is important because kitchen cabinets play a big role in how your kitchen looks. They can have a big impact on budget too. In this article, we are going to walk you through the process of buying cabinets so you know what to expect. The good news is that modern kitchen cabinets are future-proof.  There are plenty of timeless designs to choose from that fit a wide range of budgets too.

Initial Showroom Visit

We recommend that you visit a showroom so you can inspect the quality of the product. Bring the physical or digital examples of your design inspiration with you (if you have them).  We can help you build a designer board with our cabinet doors, countertop samples, backsplash, and flooring samples from our local partners. This process can take as much or as little time as you need to be sure you are choosing cabinets you will love.  You can check out cabinet door samples to take with you to countertop, tile, and flooring showrooms or to your home to see how they might look.

Kitchen Designer Visit and Measure-Up

The second step in buying your kitchen cabinets is a home visit with our kitchen designer for a professional consultation and measure-up.  To get the absolute maximum from your space, input from a professional kitchen designer is invaluable. Their experience and expertise will offer you plenty of simple ideas – as well as innovative ones – that you might not have even considered. Kitchen designers will also have up-to-the-minute knowledge of products.  Ultimately, they’ll help ensure your new kitchen not only looks good but functions well.

Design and Approval

After the kitchen designer consultation and measure-up, your designer will present and review drawings of your proposed kitchen layout with you and make any changes before the cabinet order is placed. You may also want to choose and order any hardware at this point in the process.

Shipping, Delivery, and Quality Check

Field Checking Cabinet Order

We communicate regularly with you about the lead time for your cabinet delivery. If you are doing a more extensive remodel, we can work directly with your contractor to determine when electrical, gas, plumbing, drywall, and flooring tasks are complete so we can schedule your cabinet install at the right time. Prior to installation, we field check your order.

Installation

We will let you (and your contractor if necessary) know when a professional team of installers will be arriving to hang your cabinets. They will use your approved plans.

Cabinet Protection, Hardware & Sign-Off

This photo from the cabinet installation at our showroom highlights the cabinet protection product the installers will use after they are finished. This wrap protects your new cabinets during the countertop and appliance installations. Depending on when your handles arrive, an installer may make a final trip to put those on the cabinets and add any final finish work before you sign-off.

Conclusion

That is the whole process behind buying your kitchen cabinets: showroom visit and selection, design consultation and measure-up, design review and approval, field check, installation, finish work. This is a big purchase so we recommend you choose a cabinet company with a history of successful installations. You should also make sure your cabinets come with a manufacturer’s warranty.
